Journalists and other members of the press are facing threats like never before.

Over the past year, at least 91 journalists have been killed, according to UNESCO. That is the highest annual death toll since 2018.
At the same time, a global decline in freedom of expression is taking shape as self-censorship among journalists reaches alarming levels.
A free, independent press is essential for democracies and societies to thrive.
